Communion, Confirmation, Chrismation—three different celebrations, three different traditions, one shared idea: A young person takes a conscious step in their faith and in their life.
Such moments deserve a fitting gift. Not the most expensive, not the most extravagant—but one that keeps the day memorable and is used daily.
A personalized water bottle with the name, date, and a personal greeting is exactly that.
What Differentiates Communion, Confirmation, and Chrismation
To find the right gift, it's helpful to briefly understand who you're giving it to.
Communion—the first sacrament, usually around nine years old. The child is still young; the day is festive and solemn. The gift can be playful but should also be suitable for years to come.
Chrismation (also known as Confirmation in the Catholic Church)—the third sacrament in the Catholic Church, usually in the teenage years between 13 and 16. The confirmand consciously affirms their faith. A gift that honors this step can appear a bit more mature.
Confirmation (Protestant)—the Protestant equivalent to Chrismation, also around 14 to 16 years old. The day is a transition: from childhood to youth, from school to the next phase. A gift that accompanies this transition carries more weight than one that merely looks nice.
Why a Water Bottle Suits These Occasions
First Communicants and Confirmands receive a lot on this day. Money, jewelry, books, sweets. Much of it ends up somewhere and is forgotten after a few weeks.
A water bottle does not.
It goes to school, to sports, on excursions. If it has their name, the date of the celebration, and a short personal message—then it's not just any bottle, but one with a story.
The moment a child holds the bottle with their name for the first time is brief. But it lasts.
What to Put on the Bottle—Ideas by Occasion
For Communion:
- Name + Date of First Communion
- A cross or a dove motif, simple and clear
- A short message from parents or godparents: "All the best on your journey, Emma"
- A favorite motif of the child combined with the celebration date
For Chrismation:
- Name + Chrismation date
- Chrismation motto or guiding principle—many confirmands choose a personal phrase that fits on the bottle
- Simple design: name, date, small symbol—often more suitable for teenagers than colorful motifs
- Photo from the Chrismation day as a later keepsake (if the bottle is a gift beforehand: name and date are sufficient)
For Confirmation (Protestant):
- Name + Confirmation date
- Confirmation verse—many Protestant congregations assign a personal Bible verse that fits on the bottle
- Simple, timeless design: for 14-year-olds, the gift can certainly appear adult
- Initials + year—subtle and durable
Who is the Gift From?
From Godparents—the classic godparent gift. Personal, thoughtful, with a message from the godparents on the bottle.
From Grandparents—a family name, a date, perhaps a photo. Something that connects the family.
From Siblings—simple and direct: name, date, a short message.
From Parents—as an accompanying gift alongside a larger present. Something everyday that serves as a daily reminder of the day.
Timing and Ordering
Communion and Confirmation primarily take place in spring—between March and May. Chrismations often occur in autumn.
Delivery in Switzerland and Liechtenstein: 3–5 working days. Order at least one week before the celebration day.
The Gift That Accompanies the Celebration Day
The celebration day itself is over when the cake is eaten and the guests have left.
The bottle with the name, date, and message goes to school the next morning. And reminds them of what that day meant.
